The Islamization of Constitution of 1956: The Role of Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan
Abstract
Islam played a pivotal role in the bitrh of Pakistan. Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the country's founding father, promised the Muslims during the Freedom Movement about the Islamization of polity and Constitution. However, following the establishment of Pakistan, the leadership of the Muslim League, which was initially committed to an Islamic state, began pushing for a secular state. In contrast, Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan, led by Syed Abul Ala Mawdudi, emerged as the first religious political party to vigorously advocate for the Islamization of the Constitution. Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan played a pivotal role in the struggle for the Islamization of the Constitution of 1956. Under the vibrant direction of Syed Abul Ala Mawdudi, the party launched a robust movement that ultimately succeeded in incorporating Islamic provisions into the constitution. This article aims to highlight Jamaat-e-Islami Pakistan's efforts in shaping the constitutional framework of Pakistan to reflect Islamic principles, countering the trend towards secularization advocated by the westernized leadership of the Muslim League.
