Hanafi and Shafii Jurisprudence on Sea Creatures particularly Fish and Its types and Its Impact on Halal Standards

With every passing day and in changing world the question of halal and haram has become very important for Muslims, hence the fiqh of Halal and Haram of food has a renewed interest by the academicians and researchers. Numerous researches had been done on the components of various food items and how chemical processing changes the final product. The Designing of Halal standards on the basis of these variant opinions are also affected as countries of Muslim majority follow different fiqhs. In this context consumption of different types of fish is of apprehension due to variant opinions of Muslim jurists particularly Fiqh of Shafii and Fiqh of Imam Abu Hanifa followed in Malaysia and Pakistan respectively. Not every sea creatures is fish hence not halal and also not every fish is allowed. Shafii and Hanafi both differ on the issue of fish and this difference is also reflected on the Halal standards in Malaysia and Pakistan. This article broadly discusses the variant opinions Hanafi and Shafii fiqh on the prohibition and allowance of sea creature particularly fish which directly affects the Halal standards of Pakistan and Malaysia. It also presents an analysis on these juristic opinions and how contemporary Jurists and food scientists take up these opinions to incorporate in Halal Standards.
