The struggle against British colonial rule in the Indian subcontinent witnessed significant contributions from various resistance movements, among which the role of the scholars of Deoband stands out as a pivotal force. This research provides an analytical study of the jihad led by Deobandi scholars against British imperialism, examining its historical background, ideological foundations, and practical implementation. The study aims to explore the motivations behind their resistance, the strategies they employed, and the impact of their efforts on the broader anti-colonial movement in the region.
Using a historical-analytical approach, this research investigates the socio-political and religious factors that inspired the scholars of Deoband to challenge British authority. The study delves into key resistance movements, such as the Silk Letter Movement (Tehreek-e-Reshmi Rumal), the Khilafat Movement, and other organized struggles, highlighting the active participation of Deobandi scholars in mobilizing the masses against colonial oppression. Additionally, it examines the intellectual discourse propagated by these scholars, which framed their opposition to foreign rule as both a nationalistic and religious duty.
The findings of this study suggest that the scholars of Deoband played a crucial role in shaping anti-colonial sentiments and fostering a spirit of resistance among the Muslim population of the subcontinent. Their contributions extended beyond armed struggle, as they also emphasized political awareness, religious education, and social reform as tools to combat imperial dominance. By analyzing historical records, primary sources, and scholarly interpretations, this research underscores the enduring influence of Deobandi scholars in the fight for independence.
This study not only highlights an essential chapter in the history of the subcontinent’s freedom movement but also provides insight into the broader theme of religiously motivated resistance against colonial rule. The legacy of Deobandi scholars continues to resonate in contemporary discussions on the intersection of faith, politics, and national sovereignty.
