The literal interpretation of the Qur‘ān is the interpretation that is made taking the dictionary into account while interpreting the Qur‘ān. Without a doubt, the dictionary is an essential source of Quranic exegesis. However, the entire interpretation cannot be based only on the dictionary. Acceptable and unacceptable both aspects are found in the lexical interpretations. The satisfactory element is to present Hadiths or signs to support the description. In contrast, the unacceptable pattern of the literal interpretation is the opposite. This article is aimed to evaluate the exegetical Views of Moulvī Chirāgh ‘Alī from these two aspects, as he has used the dictionary repeatedly in his writings. The article details the methodology Moulvī Chirāgh ‘Alī adopted for the exegesis of the Qur‘ān. The paper mainly deals with the various words of the Qur‘ān and their lexical discussion, which begins with the pattern of interpretation and examples from the exegesis. The article concludes with a summary of the research and some valuable suggestions from the researchers. The series of literal interpretations started from the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him). And it continued till the present. The research presented in the article is an endeavour to present a review of Urdu commentaries which were affected by this lexical methodology.
