Abstract

Allah has appointed the Muslim ummah on the prominent portfolio of leadership. This very portfolio is the seeker of several abilities and attributes. One of the most significant and prime attributes among these are provisions for solution of future problems. Scholars of the Islamic jurisprudence have emphasized over demarcating the needs of the umma, and safeguarding the religion, self (nafs), mind, material, race and flexibility in all aspects through their valuable independent reasoning (ijtehad). However, Javed Ahmed Ghamidi advocates the flexibility of male-female intermingling and shaking hands viz tolerance and relaxation. Under the garb of this flexibility, he even goes in the opposite direction of shariah i.e., going against the Islamic jurisprudence. This will have far reaching adverse impacts on Islam alone is humanity.

In this article, I have analyzed the stance of Javed Ahmed Ghamidi and other Islamic jurists on the theme of men & women intermingling. I have further explored repercussions of Ghamidi’s views on Islam in general and Islamic jurisprudence in particular.
