This research examines the Islamic legal rulings regarding the mixing of unlawful substances with lawful food items, particularly in modern processed foods and food additives. The study explains the different forms of mixing and blending of substances and analyzes how Islamic jurisprudence determines permissibility or prohibition in such cases. Classical juristic discussions, especially within the Hanafi school, are applied to contemporary issues related to processed foods, additives, and ingredients derived from doubtful or prohibited sources.
The research concludes that the ruling of a mixed substance depends upon the nature of the prohibited ingredient, its quantity, predominance, and whether its effects remain detectable after mixing. In some situations, complete absorption of a prohibited substance may affect the ruling differently, while in other cases strict prohibition remains applicable. The study further highlights that modern food additives and E-numbers should be evaluated according to established principles of Islamic jurisprudence, with precaution remaining the preferred approach in matters of food consumption.
